ANDREA PALLADIO

The greatest architect from the sixteenth century in the heart of the Marca Trevigiana

Born in Padua in 1508, Andrea Palladio was the most important architect of the Republic of Venice who developed several villas (the Veneto villas by antonomasia), churches and buildings (especially in Vicenza where he lived). The architect was guided by Gian Giorgio Trissino, a humanist and scholar. After the death of his mentor, Palladio collaborated with Daniele Barbaro who introduced him to Venice.

In 1570 he was nominated for the prestigious role of Proto [Curator of St.Mark’s] of the Serenissima (the leading architect of the Republic), succeeding to Jacopo Sansovino. During the same year he published “The four books of architecture” in which the majority of his works were illustrated. When he died in 1580 the majority of his architectural works were still to be completed.
