ANDREA PALLADIO / VILLA EMO
Villa Emo in Fanzolo
The date of the villa is controversial but it probably dates back to 1558, after Villa Barbaro, with which it shares its general layout. Palladio built this complex for Leonardo Emo, whose family owned property in Fanzolo from the middle of the fifteenth century. The composition of the villa is hierarchic, dominated by the raised owner’s wing with an imposing staircase at the front; along the sides two long symmetrical barchesse end with the two dovecotes.
The building is decisively simple compared with Villa Barbaro di Maser: the windows do not have frames, the decoration of the central unit is Doric. By contrast, the external façade has an extraordinary internal decoration, by Giovanni Zelotti.
