HISTORY, ART, ARCHITECTURE / CASTELFRANCO AND GIORGIONE
A walled city, on the borders with Marca and the homeland of Giorgione
The city of Castelfranco Veneto is characterized by its important embattled medieval walls. The long wall is decorated with beautiful eighteenth century statues, including the one located on the islet, representing Giorgione , the artist who has made this small city famous throughout the world.
Inside the walls several medieval houses and the Dome can be found, a work of art dating back to the Eighteenth century by Francesco Maria Preti, who preserves the most important work of art by Giorgione: the famous “Madonna in Trono”: this is one of the most beautiful altar pieces of the Italian Sixteenth century. Other works of art inside the Dome include “Jacopo da Bassano”, “Palma il Giovane”, “Annibale Carracci” and “Paolo Veronese”. The Academic Theatre, a splendid example of a small theatre from the Eighteenth century, also deserves a visit.
