HISTORY, ART, ARCHITECTURE / PORTOBUFFOLÈ
The outpost of the Serenissima Republic of Venice
A historical-artistic jewel of the Veneto Region, Portobuffolè made huge development during the Venetian era. The small village had a very important strategic position as it is located on the borders between the Marca Trevigiana and Friuli. As proof of this, there are plenty of Venice Lions. One of the most interesting is the one that supports the Monte di Pietà: this is one of the very few examples of leon de moeca, with a terrifying appearance in order to arouse fear in its enemies during the war.
In Piazza Beccaro, Casa Gioia deserves a visit, with its mullioned windows supported by beautiful and elegant columns with capitals shaped in lotus flowers. Only the Town Council Tower made from bricks and dating back to the X century, remains out of the seven towers of Portobuffolè.
