SURROUNDINGS / POSSAGNO
The Homeland of Antonio Canova
Possagno was the homeland of Antonio Canova. Extremely fond of his native land, he decided to build the Canoviano Temple at his own expense, now rising majestically and protecting the village. The remains of the important sculptor and his brother now rest inside. At the feet of the staircase that connects the parish church to the town centre, the Plaster Casts Gallery rises. Thanks to the contrast between the statues preserved here and the colour of its walls, an almost metaphysical feeling of surrealism can be felt.
The Plaster Casts Gallery is connected with the home of Canova and in the Fifties a wing designed by Carlo Scarpa was added on, now holding the models, plaster casts and preliminary works of the artist himself. In terms of good food: stop for a meringue with cream in the village square, at the Aurora patisserie.
